Apple Chai Smoothie with a Kombucha Cider Float

The flavors of this fall smoothie are wonderfully suited to sweater weather. And, heading into a holiday season laden with tempting treats that may have a less-than-optimal impact on your digestion, you’ll be glad to have a recipe for a gut health smoothie at the ready.

Our Apple Chai Smoothie is a secret gut health hero, and not just because of the kombucha cider float on top! All the ingredients in this spiced apple smoothie recipe work synergistically to rebalance the bacterial ecology of your gut, which can lead to a cascade of positive health benefits. Improving your gut health can have a particularly marked impact on your mental wellness. And since this kombucha smoothie includes that tangy ingredient as a float, it’s a great way to introduce that unique taste to someone who may be a little kombucha-shy.

Health Benefits
  1. Apple: researchers have discovered that bioactive compounds found in apples can increase the production of beneficial gut bacteria (Granny Smiths seem to do this especially well!).

  2. Chai: black teas, the base of chai blends, also beneficially impact the balance of bacteria in your gut. They’ve been shown to boost levels of strains that improve metabolism and prevent bloating.

  3. Honey: when raw, honey acts as a prebiotic, feeding the flora you need for good gut health. It also contains small amounts of polyphenols, which protect good bacteria and displace bad.

  4. Cinnamon: research conducted with pigs indicates that even small doses of cinnamon can lower your stomach temperature, which aids digestion.

  5. Kombucha cider: made by adding specialized bacteria, yeast, and sugar to tea, then allowing it to ferment, this naturally carbonated beverage has potent health benefits. The probiotics in kombucha can improve your digestion, quash inflammation, and even encourage healthy weight loss.
