Enticing Spiced Persimmon Holiday Smoothie

We chose to showcase lush, brightly colored persimmons, which reach peak ripeness in the autumn, in this enticing fall fruit smoothie. A hearty dash of nutmeg accentuates the honeyed taste and pudding-like texture of the persimmon, resulting in a holiday smoothie that recalls the taste of eggnog and other warming spiced beverages.

Nutmeg also adds valuable nutrients to this sweet, rich smoothie. The fragrant spice contains manganese and copper, good sources of an antioxidant called superoxide dismutase which helps lower oxidative stress inside cells.

To amp up the goodness even more, we included creamy, health-promoting banana, antioxidant-laden apple juice, and powerful inflammation-reducing MCT oil in our healthy holiday smoothie recipe.

Whip up this anti-inflammatory smoothie to help prevent the stress that can often accompany the holiday season from taking a toll on you.

Health Benefits
  1. Banana: makes this an ultra creamy smoothie and offers up a wealth of phytochemicals that can reduce inflammation, enhance immune function, and balance hormone levels, among other beneficial effects.

  2. Persimmons: contain 20% of your daily recommended vitamin A in a single fruit, plus flavonoids including quercetin and kaempferol. All three can substantially decrease inflammation.

  3. Apple juice: is made with antioxidant-rich apples, a significant portion of which can be found in the juice. Testing found that cloudy varieties that contain more apple solids have higher antioxidant activity, meaning using that kind to make your holiday smoothie will flush more harmful free radicals from your body.

  4. Almond milk: provides 50% of your daily calcium intake, and there are no side effects to trouble the lactose intolerant. Whether you are vegan or an omnivore, almond milk makes for a creamy base for any healthy smoothie.

  5. Nutmeg: offers up compounds that can elevate your mood, relieve pain, reduce inflammation (especially in your liver), and even help slow cognitive decline and speed recovery of brain tissue after a stroke.

  6. MCT oil: has many impressive benefits, including lowering inflammation levels. MCT oil has an especially significant effect on C-reactive protein (CRP), an inflammatory marker linked to an increased risk of heart disease.
