Healthy Chocolate Almond Smoothie

Let’s be honest, sometimes our soul just screams for chocolate. And that’s okay when you choose dark chocolate—a great source of antioxidants and minerals. Our Healthy Chocolate Almond Smoothie is a kid-friendly smoothie that is perfect as a healthy after-school snack.

The banana and the plantain add a good boost of fiber and potassium while the almonds, almond butter, and almond milk contain healthy fats, protein, vitamins, and minerals. Enjoy as a healthy chocolate smoothie after an intense workout or whenever you need a boost of protein and antioxidants. The texture is similar to that of a chocolate milkshake because of the frozen plantain and bananas, as well as the almond milk and almond butter.

Health Benefits
  1. Plantains and bananas: these two fruits are related, and they share similar nutrient profiles. They are both high in potassium, fiber, and vitamin C. When ripe, the plantain is very sweet. While a banana can be considered ripe just as it begins to turn yellow, a ripe plantain can be dark yellow-orange or even black. Both bananas and plantains will turn black when frozen, and when added to a smoothie they create a smooth texture, much like that of a milkshake.

  2. Almond butter and almond milk: are packed with healthy fats, protein, and antioxidants. Almonds are a superfood, and almond butter and almond milk are dairy-free ways to add protein and flavor to this healthy chocolate smoothie. When choosing the chocolate almonds to add to this smoothie recipe, be sure to select almonds dipped in dark chocolate to boost the antioxidant levels in this kid-friendly smoothie.

  3. Dark chocolate: is often touted as a health food because of its high levels of antioxidants. In this healthy chocolate almond smoothie recipe, the amount of dark chocolate is minimal, as it is just what is covering the almonds. Choose high-quality chocolate-covered almonds to reap the health benefits of this dairy-free smoothie.

  4. Vanilla: is an extract found in virtually every American pantry. Research shows real vanilla extract may help to improve cholesterol levels in addition to adding a unique flavor. Be sure to purchase high-quality real vanilla extracts and not “baking extract,” which likely doesn’t include real vanilla. If you have access to organic vanilla beans, you can easily make your own vanilla extract.
