Health Benefits
  1. Banana: one banana offers you 30% of your daily recommended intake of vitamin B-6, which your body needs to generate two specialized immune system cells called cytokines and antibodies that work together to prevent you from getting sick.

  2. Plantain: a close relative of the banana, plantain contains many of the same nutrients and a few special ones, like plantamojoside. This polyphenol appears to have similar benefits to echinacea, a well-known herbal immune health booster.

  3. Apple and apple juice: the skin of this famously healthy fruit is loaded with quercetin, an antioxidant that helps regulate your immune system and quell inflammation.

  4. Cinnamon: the essential oils in cinnamon—cinnamyl acetate, cinnamyl alcohol, and cinnamaldehyde—have antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal properties.

  5. Nutmeg: the perfect spice for a smoothie, especially one meant to keep you healthy through cold and flu season! Nutmeg contains trace minerals (specifically, potassium, iron, calcium, and manganese) that support your immune system when it has to kick into high gear.

  6. Vanilla: while there’s no research (yet!) to show that vanilla impacts immune system function, it does appear that this comforting flavor makes us happier. So while it may not affect your physical health, it will perk up your mood.
