Simple, Delicious, Cleansing Brussels Sprouts Smoothie

Brussels sprouts can be polarizing. Many have childhood memories of staring down plates full of an unappealing mound of this cruciferous vegetable. But recent years have seen a resurgence of interest in this cool weather crop. If you haven’t yet given yourself the opportunity to discover how delicious this nutty, earthy vegetable can be, now is your chance: our simple and delicious Cleansing Brussels Sprouts Smoothie.

We paired these round little sprouts with another nutritional powerhouse—kale—to create a green smoothie that will thoroughly scrub out your system. And thanks to the banana, coconut water, and fresh lemon juice we included, this detoxifying smoothie also tastes delicious!

With just a few minutes of prep and a good blender, you can fill your glass to the brim with cleansing green goodness.

  •  Servings: 1
  •  Ready In: 5 minutes
  • 1/2 cup Brussels sprouts, frozen

  • 1 banana, frozen

  • 1/2 cup kale

  • 1 cup coconut water

  • Juice of 1/2 a lemon

  1. Depending on how powerful your blender or food processor is, you may need to shred your Brussels sprouts. Once you’ve either shredded or chopped a 1/2 cup of frozen sprouts, place them in the canister of your blender or bowl of your food processor.

  2. Add 1 frozen banana.

  3. Measure and add 1/2 cup of kale.

  4. Pour in 1 cup of coconut water.

  5. Squeeze the juice from 1/2 a lemon and pour on top of the rest of the ingredients.

  6. Blend until fully combined. Brussel sprouts and kale are both tough, so be patient with this step so you can enjoy a smooth, well-blended cleansing smoothie.

Health Benefits
  1. Brussel sprouts: these miniature cabbages have massive health benefits! They contain large quantities of phytochemicals called glucosinolates, which help rid your cells of toxins. They also boost your body’s immune function and prevent DNA damage. Consuming them raw ensures maximum concentration of health-promoting phytochemicals.

  2. Banana: the perfect fruit to include in a detox smoothie, thanks to their rich stores of potassium, which regulates your fluid levels and the movement of nutrients and waste in and out of your cells. Bananas are also a good source of dietary fiber, which improves digestive health.

  3. Kale: many of the foods we regularly consume, including animal protein and dairy, can spark inflammation in our bodies. Kale offers up a significant quantity of phytonutrients like kaempferol and quercetin that can help quell that inflammation. And since it’s an alkaline vegetable, it helps cleanse your blood.

  4. Coconut water: dehydration is a prominent underlying cause of toxin buildup, because it compromises the function of our kidneys and livers. A coconut water smoothie base is ideal for rehydration since it has a similar electrolyte profile to human blood. As you restore your body’s fluid balance, your organs will once again be able to flush out toxins.

  5. Fresh lemon juice: the citric acid in lemon juice enhances liver function, allowing it to detoxify your body more effectively. Concentrations of nutrients are always highest in freshly squeezed juice, so it’s best to go the old-fashioned rather than bottled route if you have time.
